We have a friend coming over from Canada this weekend and he is very tall – 6’ 4ish. He will probably have a tough time with the doors in Japan … This is a not-uncommon door frame height in older buildings.

That’s right. A survey says at the age of 23, Japanese is 172cm tall (statistics: http://www.mhlw.go.jp/toukei/youran/data24k/2-06.xls ). I am Japanese and over 50 years old. For my age, ‘tall’ means ‘over 175cm’ in my gut feeling. Over 6 feet tall is very tall!
My husband is 6’4″ and had more than a few painful encounters with old Japanese door frames. Later we learnt the old Japanese standard for door frame was 6′. When one is half-asleep and sleep-walking to the loo, having to remember to duck at the door isn’t very easy…(=_=)
